Alabama Lands Five-Star Safety Jireh Edwards in Major Recruiting Win Over Auburn, Georgia
The Crimson Tide continues to roll on the recruiting trail.
Five-star safety Jireh Edwards, the No. 2 safety and No. 23 overall prospect in the ESPN 300 for the 2026 cycle, has committed to Alabama, choosing the Tide over SEC rivals Auburn and Georgia. His decision marks the latest major addition to Kalen DeBoer’s first full recruiting class since taking over as head coach in Tuscaloosa.
Edwards, a standout at St. Frances Academy in Baltimore, Maryland, becomes the highest-ranked commitment in Alabama’s 2026 class to date. At 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds, Edwards is known for his elite instincts, physicality, and ability to cover the entire field. His tape showcases a defensive back who reads plays like a quarterback and hits like a linebacker.
With his commitment, Alabama now has six ESPN 300 commitments since June 26, solidifying a wave of momentum during a critical recruiting window. Edwards’ pledge pushes Alabama further up the class rankings and sends a strong message that DeBoer’s staff is maintaining the high standards set by Nick Saban.
“I felt the tradition, the culture, and the coaching staff were exactly what I needed to take my game to the next level,” Edwards told ESPN. “Alabama develops DBs better than anyone.”
That tradition of defensive back excellence featuring recent NFL stars like Minkah Fitzpatrick, Patrick Surtain II, and Trevon Diggs played a significant role in Edwards’ decision. Alabama’s new coaching staff has emphasized continuing that legacy, and securing a player of Edwards’ caliber confirms that they’re succeeding in that mission.
Though Auburn and Georgia made strong pushes down the stretch, Edwards’ bond with Alabama’s defensive staff proved to be the difference. Secondary coach Colin Hitschler and defensive coordinator Kane Wommack reportedly built a close relationship with Edwards and his family throughout the spring and summer.
Edwards brings versatility to the Tide’s future secondary. He can play deep safety in coverage, move down into the box as a run-stopper, or even match up in man coverage against slot receivers and tight ends. His commitment gives Alabama a potential centerpiece in their 2026 defense.
