The New York Knicks came up short in their pursuit of elite perimeter defender Marcus Smart, who ultimately chose to sign with their long-time rival, the Los Angeles Lakers.

According to Stefan Bondy of the New York Post, the Knicks were among the teams that “checked in” with Smart during his free agency process. However, New York was unable to offer a role or contract that aligned with the veteran guard’s expectations.

“Per source, Knicks couldn’t offer the type of role Marcus Smart was looking for,” Bondy noted on social media.

Smart, who was recently bought out by the rebuilding Washington Wizards, drew interest from multiple contenders. But it was the Lakers who secured his services with a two-year, $11 million contract, which includes a player option for the second year, as reported by Shams Charania of The Athletic.

One major hurdle for the Knicks was financial flexibility. With limited cap space and only the veteran minimum available, they were unable to present a competitive offer. Smart, who was the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2022 and has three All-Defensive team selections under his belt, was reportedly seeking a significant on-court role and a contract reflecting his value — neither of which the Knicks could provide under their current cap constraints.

Adding Smart would have been a major defensive boost for New York, particularly alongside star point guard Jalen Brunson. His tenacity, leadership, and experience in high-pressure playoff environments would’ve been an ideal complement to the Knicks’ backcourt.

Instead, Smart joins a retooled Lakers squad led by LeBron James and Anthony Davis, as Los Angeles continues its effort to surround its stars with experienced, defense-first veterans. The Lakers weren’t the only team chasing Smart — both the Phoenix Suns and Milwaukee Bucks reportedly made strong pushes for the veteran guard, but ultimately fell short.

For the Knicks, missing out on Smart is a clear setback in their offseason plans. With limited financial options and a roster in need of defensive depth and leadership, their margin for improvement is slim. While New York has made strides in recent seasons, including a playoff run behind Brunson’s emergence as a franchise cornerstone, they now face added pressure to find alternative upgrades before training camp.

As Smart heads to Los Angeles, the Knicks will need to pivot quickly if they hope to keep pace with the rapidly improving Eastern Conference landscape.
