The New York Rangers have paid tribute to one of their most loyal and respected former players, Jesper Fast, following his official retirement from the National Hockey League. The 33-year-old winger announced his decision on Monday morning after a career that spanned over a decade and included 703 regular-season NHL games.
Fast, originally selected by the Rangers in the sixth round (157th overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, became a fan favourite and an integral part of the team’s identity during his 10-year tenure in New York. Known for his relentless work ethic, defensive reliability, and quiet leadership, he proudly wore the alternate captain’s “A” for four seasons, underscoring the trust and admiration he earned within the organization.
In their message shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the Rangers wrote:
“Congratulations on a great career, Quickie! Wishing you all the best in retirement.”
The message, though brief, reflected the high regard in which the team continues to hold Fast, whose nickname “Quickie” mirrored his style of play—fast, efficient, and ever dependable.
Jesper Fast’s retirement comes after a challenging year sidelined by injury. In the final game of the Carolina Hurricanes’ 2023-24 season, he suffered a severe neck injury that required surgery in August 2024. As a result, he was forced to miss the entire 2024-25 season and the Hurricanes’ subsequent playoff campaigns.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Fast described the period as one of the most difficult in his professional life:
“Worst-case scenario. Just when the fun is about to start, you’re sitting on the sideline. You just want to help your team and be part of it… It’s definitely one of the toughest periods in my career,” he admitted.
In a heartfelt statement released through the Carolina Hurricanes, Fast expressed deep gratitude for everyone who played a part in his journey:
“I never took for granted the privilege of playing in the best league in the world. I am grateful for all of the teammates, coaches, staff and fans from the Rangers and Hurricanes who made my time in the NHL so special, and for my family for everything they did to help me achieve and live my dream.”
He also acknowledged the early influence of Swedish clubs Nässjö HC and HV71, which helped mold him into the professional athlete he became.
Over the course of his career, Fast recorded 248 points, with 91 goals and 157 assists in 703 regular-season games. He also featured in 80 playoff contests, where he added 27 points, including 14 goals. His plus-41 career rating further highlighted his all-around impact on the ice.
Although his playing days have concluded, Jesper Fast’s legacy—especially within the Rangers organization—remains secure. His professionalism, consistency, and unassuming leadership style left an indelible mark, and the Rangers’ tribute serves as a fitting send-off for a player who gave so much to the game.
