As the Miami Hurricanes navigate a pivotal offseason filled with departures and uncertainty, the team has taken another critical step in rebuilding its pitching rotation. With the departure of several key arms from last season, Miami has tapped into the transfer portal to reinforce its mound depth, landing former UNLV two-way player Michael Taylor — a move that reflects the Hurricanes’ adaptive strategy as they prepare for the upcoming campaign.

Taylor, who announced his commitment via X (formerly Twitter), expressed deep appreciation for the opportunity to join the Hurricanes. “I am extremely excited to announce my commitment to the University of Miami. I am so grateful for this opportunity and would like to thank the coaching staff for making me a Hurricane,” Taylor posted.

A former batter turned pitcher at UNLV, Taylor becomes the third transfer added by Miami this offseason. His transition to full-time pitching echoes the path taken by current Miami ace Griffin Hugus, who joined the program as a two-way player from Cincinnati before becoming one of the Hurricanes’ most reliable starters.

During the 2024 season, Taylor showed promise in relief for the Rebels. He compiled a 3.86 ERA across 21 innings, striking out 27 batters while allowing 18 hits and 13 walks. He conceded 10 runs, nine of which were earned, and displayed a solid arsenal that includes a low-90s fastball and a sharp-cutting breaking ball. The Hurricanes coaching staff sees him as another high-upside project with the potential to develop into a dependable bullpen weapon—or even more.

Taylor’s addition comes at a time when the Hurricanes’ rotation is undergoing significant change. With several senior pitchers moving on and others testing the transfer waters, Miami’s staff is relying heavily on a mix of returning talent and new arrivals. Fortunately, the team appears to have a foundation to build upon. Freshman All-American AJ Ciscar and fellow freshman standout Tate DeRias emerged late last season as reliable starters, showcasing their potential in high-pressure NCAA Tournament matchups.

Depending on whether Hugus decides to return for another season, Miami could enter next year with a trio of intriguing arms. Ciscar and DeRias, in particular, are expected to take on larger roles, while Taylor’s arrival provides additional depth and versatility to a staff that needs to be both resilient and adaptable.

Miami has made it clear this offseason that it is serious about maintaining competitiveness in the ACC, even as it copes with the departure of veteran players.
