Idrissa Gana Gueye could be on his way out of Everton this summer as uncertainty continues to surround his future at the club. The veteran midfielder, who played a key role for the Toffees last season, is yet to agree to a new deal and is reportedly attracting interest from clubs abroad.

Gueye, now 35 years old, made 37 appearances in the Premier League during the last campaign and remains one of Everton’s most consistent performers. Manager David Moyes is said to value the experience and leadership the Senegalese international brings, especially as Everton prepare to move into their new home, the Hill Dickinson Stadium, later this year.

Talks over a contract extension between Gueye and Everton have been ongoing for some time, but the negotiations have taken a turn. Initially, the midfielder appeared pleased with the club’s interest in keeping him, but reports suggest he has since rejected the one-year deal offered to him. Gueye is believed to be pushing for a longer contract, which Everton seem reluctant to grant due to his age.

The situation has drawn the attention of other clubs, particularly from abroad. French clubs Rennes and Paris FC have reportedly shown interest, and now Turkish side Trabzonspor have entered the race. According to Turkish outlet Fotospor (19 June), Gueye is one of the club’s key summer targets. With his contract set to expire, the fact that he could be signed as a free agent makes him an attractive option.

Despite the interest from elsewhere, David Moyes is still keen on keeping Gueye at Goodison Park. The midfielder has served Everton across two spells, originally joining from Aston Villa in 2016, and then returning from Paris Saint-Germain in 2022. Over his two stints with the club, Gueye has made 208 appearances, scoring seven goals and providing eight assists.

While there’s no doubt about Gueye’s quality and the valuable presence he offers on and off the pitch, there are concerns about offering him a long-term contract at his age. Everton are reportedly standing firm on their one-year offer, and many within the club feel it would be risky to offer more. There is the fear that a longer deal could backfire if Gueye’s performance levels begin to decline as he gets older.

Everton are walking a fine line — they recognise the importance of keeping an experienced figure like Gueye during a transitional period, but they also want to avoid making a costly mistake by offering too much security to a player nearing the twilight of his career.
