In a pivotal recruiting development, four-star defensive lineman Vodney Cleveland from Parker High School in Birmingham, Alabama, has committed to the Texas Longhorns, choosing the out-of-state powerhouse over Auburn. Cleveland, a top-tier prospect in the 2026 class, ranks as the No. 4 overall player in Alabama and one of the most coveted defensive linemen in the country.

His decision marks a significant shift in the recruiting landscape, especially for Auburn, who was in a strong position to secure the in-state star. The Tigers had hoped to keep Cleveland within Alabama borders, especially after a dominant in-state recruiting cycle in 2025. However, their struggles to maintain that momentum into 2026 are becoming more evident with Cleveland becoming the fourth top-10 player from the state to pledge to a different SEC school. He now joins Zyan Gibson (Alabama), Hezekiah Harris (Auburn), and Marquez Daniel (Florida) as premier Alabama talents who have already declared their commitments.

Despite securing a commitment from four-star EDGE rusher Hezekiah Harris, Auburn has now missed out on several key targets, with Cleveland being one of the biggest.

Still, all hope is far from lost for the Tigers. Auburn remains a contender for several of the top-10 recruits from Alabama, including No. 1-ranked wide receiver Cederian Morgan, elite EDGE rusher Anthony Jones at No. 2, and top quarterback Landon Duckworth, ranked third. In addition, Auburn has its sights on other high-potential athletes such as Jaquez Wilkes (No. 6 EDGE) and Ezavier Crowell (No. 7 running back), both of whom remain interested in the Tigers.

Currently, Auburn holds three defensive commitments for the 2026 class, including Harris and Shadarius Toodle, a top-15 Alabama prospect and the No. 18-ranked linebacker nationally. While their current class sits at No. 57 in the 247Sports 2026 recruiting rankings, there’s still plenty of time to climb the charts, especially if they can land a few more big names from the state’s elite.
