Legendary Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant has expressed his sorrow over the tragic passing of Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota, who died at the age of 28 in a devastating car accident in northern Spain. Jota’s younger brother, 25-year-old André Silva, also a professional footballer, was killed in the same incident.

The crash occurred in the early hours of Thursday, July 3, while Jota was reportedly driving from Portugal to Santander, where he was scheduled to take a ferry back to England for pre-season training with Liverpool. Recent minor surgery had prevented him from flying, and during the journey, the vehicle veered off the road and caught fire following a suspected tyre burst during an overtaking manoeuvre.

Robert Plant, a devoted football fan and Vice President of Wolverhampton Wanderers—Jota’s former club—took to social media platform X to honour the Portuguese star. “What a tragic loss. The dimming of a bright, shining light,” Plant wrote. “Thank you for your magic, Diogo.”

Jota began his career at Paços de Ferreira before making his way into European football via Atlético Madrid. He made a name for himself during a loan spell at Wolverhampton Wanderers in the 2017–18 season, helping the team secure promotion to the Premier League. He remained with Wolves for two more seasons before transferring to Liverpool in 2020 for a reported fee of £41 million.

During his five years at Anfield, Jota became a key figure in Liverpool’s attack, known for his intelligent movement, versatility, and clinical finishing. He helped the Reds secure a Premier League title in the 2024–25 season and lifted multiple trophies during his tenure, including an FA Cup and two EFL Cups. Internationally, Jota was capped 49 times for Portugal and played an important role in their recent UEFA Nations League triumph.

Just 11 days prior to the tragedy, Jota had married his longtime partner Rute Cardoso. He leaves behind his wife and their three young children. The loss has sent shockwaves through the football and music worlds alike, prompting heartfelt messages from fellow players and managers.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Jota’s teammate for the Portuguese national team, wrote: “It doesn’t make sense. Just now we were together in the national team, you had just got married. I know you will always be with them. Rest in peace, Diogo and André. We will miss you.”
