Christopher Nkunku was labeled a “total waste of money” after his lackluster performance in Chelsea’s 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Brighton on Saturday, a match that further highlighted the club’s ongoing struggles. Despite taking the lead early due to a calamitous mistake from Brighton’s goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, Chelsea ultimately succumbed to goals from Georginio Rutter and Kaoru Mitoma, which saw Enzo Maresca’s side dumped out of the competition in the fourth round. This defeat extended Chelsea’s miserable recent form, with just three wins in their last ten games across all competitions, leaving fans and pundits alike questioning the direction the club is headed under Maresca’s management.
Although Chelsea fielded a relatively strong team away from home, their performance left much to be desired, particularly in front of their traveling supporters. The Blues struggled to generate meaningful chances, managing just two shots on target throughout the entire 90 minutes. The absence of injured duo Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu handed Nkunku a rare opportunity to lead the line for Chelsea, but once again, the French forward failed to live up to expectations. Nkunku, who has struggled for form since joining the club, was heavily linked with an exit during the January transfer window, having made only three Premier League starts under Maresca this season.
Despite the rare starting opportunity, Nkunku’s performance on the day did little to silence critics. Former Chelsea player Craig Burley was particularly scathing in his assessment, stating that Nkunku had yet to prove why he deserved more chances in the starting XI. Speaking to ESPN, Burley said, “There was no cutting edge to the game. Palmer has stopped influencing games like he was. Nkunku up front, I mean, what a total waste of money he’s been.” Burley also criticized Chelsea’s defensive fragility, adding, “They are looking a bit fragile at the back.”
Burley went on to suggest that the early optimism about Chelsea’s title prospects had quickly faded, with the team now slipping into a frustrating cycle of pedestrian play reminiscent of the past regimes under Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino, and Thomas Tuchel. Despite holding 57 percent possession, more than Brighton, Chelsea failed to make any significant impact on the game. “What did they do with it? Absolutely nothing,” Burley remarked.
The defeat leaves Chelsea in a precarious position as they continue to fight for a top-four spot in the Premier League. However, Burley warned that Maresca could soon be facing pressure if results do not improve quickly. “We know this ownership and club can make random and rash decisions,” Burley said, reflecting on the volatile nature of Chelsea’s management. “They won’t give you two or three years like Arsenal did with Mikel Arteta during the bad spells.” He added that the club’s patience with Maresca could wear thin if performances continue to dip and Chelsea’s European ambitions are jeopardized.
After the match, Maresca admitted that Chelsea had missed the presence of Jackson in attack. The Senegalese international has been sidelined through injury but could return for Chelsea’s next Premier League fixture on Friday. “Sometimes I think you need to play games without players to realize how important they are,” Maresca reflected. “We said many times about Nico: he is important on and off the ball. Off the ball, his intensity is very good, and on the ball, he is always a threat.”
Despite the defeat, Maresca remained philosophical about the performance, pointing to the team’s early dominance in the match. “We started the game very good,” he said. “In the first half, probably the only shot on goal they had was the goal.” He continued, “We controlled, we created some chances, and the second half, more or less, it happened the same. Probably the only shot on goal was the second goal. We had a few chances to draw, and we missed.”
With Chelsea now out of the FA Cup, Maresca expressed a sense of focus moving forward, with the Premier League and the Conference League taking center stage. “Now, if there is something good after a defeat, it’s that we can be focused on the Premier League and Conference League,” he said, hoping to redirect the team’s attention to upcoming challenges.
As Chelsea’s season continues to unfold, questions remain about whether the current squad and management can turn things around before it’s too late. The club’s lack of cutting edge in attack, combined with defensive vulnerabilities, paints a worrying picture for the future.
